Category management is about creating partnerships to deliver ‘win win’ opportunities for the retailer, the supplier and the shopper.

Jack Warren, ISB Buyer from Tesco explains how strong partnerships can optimize category management.

- Within my role as a buyer I have a broad portfolio of products, all of which have distinct trends and contain unique behaviours. Even with the best will in the world, I cannot dive as deeply as I would like to. Category management provides me with the information I use to inform my decisions, says Jack Warren.

Jack Warren is very satisfied with the category support he receives from Lantmännen Unibake including periodic updates focusing on macro environmental considerations, opportunities to capitalize on and things to be wary of.

Category recommendations

When Tesco undertakes a range review the entire range can be changed and category recommendations are essential. The reviews literally drive how the range looks and how products are presented, finding gaps in the range to fill and lines to be removed.

- It is my experience that we achieve the best and most balanced range when we combine commercial, consumer and operational knowledge from our own business and from our partners, concludes Jack Warren.
