The bakery group makes major investment in a new bakery in the UK, thereby further consolidating its position in the UK market.
Over the last 18 months Lantmännen Unibake has invested heavily in the UK market. The next stage in the group’s growth strategy is a major investment in new production capacity in the UK.
In May 2008 the bakery group bought up the British bakery Eurobuns and one year later acquired the majority shareholding in Bakehouse, the UK’s leading supplier of Danish pastries, croissants and speciality bread. The UK is now Lantmännen Unibake’s largest market, and the group is further consolidating its position in the UK market by investing in new production capacity.
“The UK is our biggest market, and the new bakery means that we are in a really strong position with a full production set-up. It will bring us even closer to our UK customers and put us in the best possible position to meet the huge growth we are experiencing in the UK,” says CEO of Lantmännen Unibake Bent Pultz Larsen.
Geared to the UK market
As part of the group’s ambitious growth strategy Lantmännen Unibake in the UK has in the last 18 months evolved from being a sales company to a company that manages the full production process.
The acquisition of Eurobuns in May 2008 meant that Lantmännen Unibake was able to start producing its own bread in the UK, giving it access to the market for frozen bread. The agreement with Bakehouse in May 2009 led to the company acquiring specialist expertise in selling to retail and the food service business.
The latest investment completes Lantmännen Unibake’s production set-up in the UK, incorporating the group’s specialist expertise in product and concept development particularly with regard to the UK market.
”We now have everything we need to be able to offer our UK customers the best service on the market, in terms of offering the world’s largest choice of bakery products, along with product development and a marketing approach geared to the UK market,” says Bent Pultz Larsen.
The exact location of the bakery has not yet been decided, but the bakery is expected to be ready for operation by the end of 2010.
