Unibake renews talks about the environment with key suppliers
Packaging waste is hard to manage when you distribute bakery products to thousands of international customers every day. Today, it’s the customers who decide how to dispose of the tonnes of cardboard boxes and plastic bags that protect Lantmännen Unibake products during transport and storage.
What you can do is make sure the packaging you use is as sustainable as possible and provide information about responsible recycling. This is the journey the Unibake group procurement team is on right now in partnership with suppliers.
More sustainable, less use
Our biggest packaging supplier, for example, supplies corrugated cardboard boxes made from 70% recycled fibre and 30% virgin fibre sourced from sustainably managed forests. In a pilot project at the Unibake bakery in Harrislee, Germany, use of this sustainable cardboard has been reduced – with a positive knock-on effect for transport-related carbon emissions.
“Tests found that our products could be transported safely using a more lightweight cardboard. With this solution, our supplier can deliver many more boxes per pallet – and more per truck,”
explains Peter Børgesen, Unibake global category manager for packaging.
“So, the bakery has not only cut back on its cardboard consumption. Carbon emissions related to transporting cardboard packaging to the bakery have fallen more than 60% a year.”
The next bakery in line for a similar tailored solution is at Örebro in Sweden.
Dialogue with suppliers
Senior manager of group procurement, Sari Hakkarainen says the environment will top the Unibake procurement team’s agenda in planned discussions with key packaging, raw material, energy and logistics suppliers over the next few months. A separate initiative will explore opportunities to source sustainable plastic packaging.
“We can see that many of our suppliers have a clear focus on the environment. Based on our dialogue with suppliers, we will consider whether further measures are necessary to ensure suppliers have a similar focus to ours on, for example, reducing energy consumption. Our aim is to use suppliers that contribute actively to our company’s environmental targets.”
